The tours through Madeira’s mountains are also ideal preparation for alpine marathons and other mountain events. Nowhere else can you get so many metres in altitude together as here in Madeira…

Tour I approx. 85 km / 1500 metres in altitude
From Caniço, the first 17 km are slowly downhill with a few small stitches to Machico, the oldest town in Madeira. Now it goes up about 15 km, 6% to Ribeira Seca. Then we go down to the eastern point of the island Ponta de São Lorenço. With good visibility we see the neighbouring island Porto Santo. Now we go back to Machico and then 9 km maximum 12% to Portela at an altitude of about 750 m to Camacha, the well known basket weaver village, we stay at the same altitude but there are lots of small stitches with 50 – 100 meters of altitude. After a descent of about 11 km, we reach Livramento at 300 m, the last 6 km to the hotel are only downhill.

Tour II approx. 85 km / 3000 m altitude difference
We start again as yesterday 17 km to Machico, from there through several tunnels (illuminated) at about 400 m to Faial, then a steep descent to Porto da Cruz. Now the approx. 18 km long, up to 15% ascent begins through a large forest area via Faial, Ribeiro Frio to Poiso at 1413 m. This is followed by a very steep descent via Monte to Funchal and then like Tour I over the 6 km long climb to Livramento and
6 Km down to the hotel.

Tour III king stage approx. 150 km / approx. 4300 m altitude difference
From the hotel, the route is first very steep 7 km up to 18% to Camacha, along the paradise valley at 1400 m to Poiso. Then the 15 km downhill to Faial at sea level – we are constantly moving between 0 – 500 metres in altitude, via Santana, São Jorge, Ponta Delgada to São Vicente. Here begins the up to 18% and 11 km long, partly steep descent to Ribeira Brava back to the south coast. This is followed by a 13 km long 5 – 6% maximum 14% ascent to Quinta Grande at 500 m and a 10 km long descent to the fishing village Camâra de Lobos. Then the road is slightly hilly until Funchal before we reach the final 6 km long climb to São Gonçalo and enjoy the last 6 km downhill to the hotel.

Tour IV approx. 120 km / 3000 metres altitude difference
We drive about 15 minutes by car to Ribeira Brava, from here the road is first gentle and then increasingly steep 11 km up to Encumeada, at 1007 m, where we turn west to the 1400 m high plateau, cross the “Madeira Nature Park”, where we take the long steep descent to Porto Moniz (known for its large natural swimming pools) on the north side. Now we are on our way back to Ribeira Brava over countless small stitches of 50 – 100 metres in altitude and thousands of bends on well constructed low-traffic roads.

Here you can see the best mountain goat passes for mountain freaks and mountain bikers.
-We don’t want to create a cycling factory, but our idea is to conquer the mountains of the island in small groups in a sporty or leisurely way.
The tour planning is done individually and can be changed at short notice if desired.
We have put together some routes between 20 and 200 km which can be changed at short notice if desired. The road conditions on Madeira are very good. The new motorway is a real blessing for the cyclists.
Outside the capital Funchal and in the interior you hardly ever meet a car. In contrast to the road bikers, the MTB bikers have it easier, most of the routes pass the levadas (artificial small water channels).
One rides for hours through the scenically beautiful mountains without overcoming great differences in altitude. Of course we have some more demanding tours with great differences in altitude to offer. Here are some examples of passes and summits:
